Plastics drove the growth of the Italian design industry ...

Plastics drove the growth of the Italian design industry in the second half of the 1900s and led to the creation of modern industrial icons.

Because of their low cost combined with easy processing and production on a large scale, plastic materials soon spread to several sectors, including that of writing instruments.

With shiny colors and a variety of marble textures, epoxy resins are among the best plastics for making pens. Created through a melting and printing process, or by hand-turning resin rods or sheets, the resulting components are all different and unique, quintessentially Visconti, and evoke the typical marble finish of traditional celluloid.

Before modern plastic materials ..

Before modern plastic materials, bakelite ruled the day in the first half of the 20th century. It still provides unsurpassed heat resistance and low electrical conductivity.

In 1864, John Wesley Hyatt discovered celluloid, a mixture of cotton, alcohol and camphor. It is flexible, unbreakable, shock resistant and waterproof.

Celluloid pens can be manufactured by either wrapping celluloid sheets around a rod or by machine-turning them. Celluloid is easy to color and hypoallergenic; it can absorb moisture from our hands, so it feels smooth and pleasant to the touch, and its excellent resilience makes it perfect for creating pens.

Celluloid items should be stored in ventilated places away from sunlight, at temperatures not exceeding 25-30°. Celluloid should be cleaned with a silicone sponge, like a shoe sponge.

Ebonite was developed by the famous inventor Charles Goodyear.

Ebonite was developed by the famous inventor Charles Goodyear.

This was the first material used for Visconti fountain pens and it is composed of vulcanized rubber with an excess of sulfur and the addition of mineral and organic compounds.
Ebonite pens become opaque because sulfur tends to migrate to the surface.

To prevent color fading, store in ventilated areas away from direct sunlight. To clean ebonite, use a microfiber cloth and a silicone sponge.

Unfortunately, this valuable material is rarely used today. However, Visconti continues to use it for some of its collections.

Visconti is the first company in the pen market to have introduced lava

Visconti is the first company in the pen market to have introduced lava: the company successfully produced a compound containing basaltic lava, catalyzed with resin in a secret, patented formula. Lava powder is an ancient material obtained from volcanic rocks; shatterproof and smooth to the touch, it is perfect to make unique writing instruments.

Visconti uses valuable Tuscan marble, including red Florentine marble and green Serpentine marble, to evoke the essence of the Italian Renaissance. These beautiful materials reach their highest potential in Visconti’s Lorenzo Il Magnifico Pen.

With a clear reference to the region of Tuscany, Terracotta is another natural material used for Visconti pen collections.
