Camouflage was first used in the military at the beginning of the 19th century. Riflemen, who began to wear green and grey uniforms to hide from the enemy, were the pioneers of camouflage. But it was with the First World War, and the development of more precise weapons, that camouflage became a necessity. At the time it was employed both to reduce the risk of being shot and to avoid being spotted from above by air fleets.
Initially used only for uniforms, camouflage was later used on trucks, aircraft and entire camps. This led to the emergence of so-called ‘camoufleur’ artists, who specialised in the art of camouflage. Black, green, brown and khaki are the colours that, in all their shades, have always been used to create a camouflage effect that recalls the nuances of natural landscapes.
At the end of the 1960s, military print became a means of gaining visibility and was worn by women on peace marches. In 1986, it became the focal point of a pop piece by Andy Warhol, Camouflage Self-Portrait. Today, camouflage is a recurring trend in both fashion and design.
Though born out of the need to become invisible to the enemy, camouflage is now a means to attract attention. Modern interpretations of camouflage include fluorescent and unconventional colour combinations.
