“You can find out more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.”
The origin of Backgammon, also known as Tavola Reale or Tric-Trac in Italian, is commonly traced back some 4500 years to the so-called Royal Game of Ur, found in the tomb of a Sumerian king during excavations in the ancient Mesopotamian city of Ur, in present-day Iraq.
From those territories, following cyclical migrations of ethnic groups and populations, the game later spread both westward and eastward, fostering the emergence of numerous variants and sub-variants.
LIFE IN A GAME
The co-presence of discordant color elements such as black and white seems to represent the dualistic worldview in ancient Indo-European culture, which can be characterized by the conflict between good and evil, life and death, day and night. Backgammon, in its ability to mix components of skill and luck, therefore symbolizes a certain view of human existence. The outcome of a game cannot be planned at first glance as well as success in life: luck is as important as brilliance.
