“In the spring of her childhood, Anselm roamed the green garden. Among the flowers of his mother, there was one called iris that he particularly liked. he pressed his cheek to the long light green leaves, he passed his fingers on the sharp edges, he sucked deeply the scent of the splendid corollas, he looked inside”
Hermann Hesse
IL GIARDINO DELL’IRIS
This pen is a tribute to the delicate beauty and ephemeral elegance of the irises that bloom between the end of April and the end May in the historic Giardino dell’Iris (Iris Garden) in Florence, which is located near the Piazzale Michelangelo and offers a stunning view of the city.
The history of the so-called “lily of Florence” is controversial. It seems that it originated from a white Iris, the Iris Florentina, which grew abundantly in the Arno Valley during the Florentine Republic and which the people called “ghiacciolo” or icicle, for its white, slightly bluish color.
THE FLOWER OF FLORENCE
The iris is not only a symbol of Florence, but also of its rich history and culture.
The lily was adopted as the emblem of the city in the 11th century, when it was used to decorate the banners and shields of the Florentine soldiers. The lily also represents wisdom, courage and faith, qualities that have characterized Florence throughout the centuries.
